How did Irish Dance begin?

February 16th, 2011

How did Irish dance begin? The answer is cloaked in mystery but it can be safely believed that the initial seeds of Irish dance were planted by the Druids. Their religious ceremonies taking part in honor of the oak and the sun bore traces of the ring dances of Ireland today.

With every one successive invasion and migrations from other persons, religions and cultures stepping foot on Irish ground, numbers of them would be assimilated into the hallmarks of current Irish dancing. As a result, historians be in agreement that although Irish dances are unique unto themselves, these bear traces of influence from other cultures right as much as these maintain influenced the dances of other folks.

In the 12th century Anglo-Norman occupation, the Normans brought with them the Carol. Mainly, the head of the group was surrounded by a round of dancers that replied with the same song that was sung by him. It is the recollection of the give and take approach with which step dance is performed albeit with the feet through steps as a substitute of the mouth via songs.

At some point in the 16th century, Irish dances were brought to the royal Queen Elizabeth I. These incorporated the Trenchmore, an adaptation of Irish peasant dances, and the Hey, the forerunner of the reel. Writings from this century additionally referred to the Rinnce Fada otherwise the stretched dance.

In more recent days, Irish dancing came to be known around the globe, with credit to the brilliant performers and step dance routines of Riverdance. Millions of the population from around the globe has appreciated and continues to be thankful for the rapid, precise but elegant actions of the step dancers clothed in their colorful costumes.

With the assimilation of cultures into the existing Irish culture of the period, many variations of Irish dances have appeared. In the present day, Irish dances are classified into social dances and performance dances. Yet, every dance is a performance within itself and an opportunity to socialize.

Irish social dances are additionally separated into set dancing and céilí dances. Even though set dances like the quadrilles are performed by four couples arranged into a square, the céilí dances are performed by two to sixteen people taking part in a number of formations. But formation is not the lone difference in these dances seeing that large stylistic variations are additionally put on. And with brand new members entering the Irish dances, we can observe new variations emerge.

Irish dancing has gone a distance from its origins in the role of a formal dance to develop into a feature of fierce pride for the Irish persons.

The benefits of Kindermusik at the Asheville Arts Center

February 8th, 2011

Kindermusik is a method of early childhood education in music and movement. Our Kindermusik program encompasses a vast variety of benefits to children’s development.

Cognitive, social, emotional, and physical, are just a few of the developmental areas that the Kindermusik environment focuses on. Children in a Kindermusik classroom are not just learning and developing in one area but the whole-child approach is meeting all of their developmental needs.

Kindermusik uses music as the means to reach the whole child and fulfill his developmental needs. As children join in the ritual of singing hello and goodbye songs they are forming a common bond with classmates, becoming comfortable with a new community of friends, and their safety and security in the classroom is solidified.

Singing silly, imaginative songs helps children create new and unfamiliar vocal sounds which in turn encourages creativity and speech development.

Listening, singing, clapping, and playing instruments to a beat instills internal rhythm in children, creating an awareness of the music within and around them.

Jumping, dancing, and playing to music gets children’s bodies in motion and as a result, get their brains growing. As children see their parents participate in these activities, they are exposed to the importance of exercise and whole body movement as a part of family health and happiness.

This type of large motor movement also assists in developing children’s vestibular system, which is crucial for processing language, understanding spatial relationships, and even for emotional security.

As children play, they imagine and create. They challenge themselves to new actions and discover what they are and are not capable of. Through play, children learn to problem solve and build cognitive thinking skills.

In the Kindermusik classroom, play and imagination are embraced and scaffolded by parents and teachers so that children can reach their full potential whatever their age.
